MOSTRA D’OLTREMARE, NAPLES, ITALY

Mostra d'Oltremare, a large complex whose surface is over 60 hectares, was created in 1937 by the central Government. The Government chose Naples to be the venue of the Triennial Exhibition of Italian Overseas Lands (Universal Theme Exhibition). This project was part of a larger project to help the urban development of Naples and promote the economic development of Southern Italy. The result was one of the best urban developments of the time, a mixture of buildings and pavilions designed by some of the best young Neapolitan architects and by other Italian experts. Mostra d'Oltremare Ltd is a multi-functional complex and natural park; an architectural, historic and cultural site integrated in the western part of Naples and the venue of business activities, ranging from exhibitions and conferences to events and shows. Mostra d'Oltremare was severely damaged by the World War Two bombing and was rebuilt at the beginning of the Fifties. The older, damaged buildings were replaced by new ones (with a more rational design) which today co-exist in pleasant harmony with the original surviving buildings.
